VADM Nancy Brown
Overview
Vice Admiral, Nancy Brown, retired after completing over 35 years of service. Her last active duty position was as the Director, Command, Control, Communications and Computer Systems (C4 Systems), The Joint Staff. Since retiring, she has been appointed as an Outside Director of Systematic Software, to the Board of Directors of the United States Naval Institute, and the Executive Board of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.
While on active duty VADM Brown’s command tours included: an assignment as Officer in Charge, Naval Radio and Receiving Facility Kami Seya, Japan, Commanding Officer of the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Cutler, Downeast Maine, and Commanding Officer Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic, Norfolk. She was on the National Security Council staff, at the White House, and was also the Deputy Director, White House Military Office. When she deployed to Iraq, she became part of the first Multi-National Force-Iraq C6, headquarter in Baghdad. Once she returned, she was assigned as the J6 for both North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command.
As Director C4 Systems, VADM Brown orchestrated staff efforts for the DoD Net-Centric Portfolio, valued at $153 Billion over the Five-Year Defense Planning cycle, providing improved capability across the spectrum of the DoD missions. Her Efforts closed the gaps in warfighting systems, making the joint force more effective. She successfully led and coordinated the multi-national force effort to restore military and civilian communications capabilities throughout Iraq, while supporting continued military operations of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As the Principle Advisor to the Chairman of the JCS and the Secretary of Defense for Information Technology, Net-Centric Operations and Cyber Warfare, she was instrumental in the development of the first National Military Strategy for Cyberspace Operations and revolutionized how cyber is viewed from warfighting perspective.
